Long Jump Puberty
“If I jump 2ft further each year, soon I will be an Olympian!”
2014 - 15
Sun Kei Secondary School was returned to Division 1. In contrast, Jason with a wasted summer was definitely out of shape.
The school had better hurdlers, so Jason wouldn't be doing any more hurdling.
First time long jumping in a meet
At 14 years old, he jumped 5.16m. Although he scored 1 point for the team, it was insufficient to stop Sun Kei from being demoted.
He bore the consequence of laziness. He promised himself that he wouldn’t miss any training sessions.
He finally learned how to commit thru failure!
Jason was in lane 8
2016 - 17
Jason’s work ethic and influence on peers brought him to the Captain position. That being said, he had more on his shoulder now. No more clock-in clock-out mentality, he had to lead by example and pass his spirit to all teammates.
The small team builds strong bonds! Jason and his team worked hard throughout the year. As an underdog, they were ready to fight like a warrior against the best genetics in Hong Kong.
6.45m in the first round!!! This was a mark far out of his shooting range. This excitement is still vivid in Jason’s mind, just, unforgettable.
Jumping the furthest in the most important meet, what more could you ask for?
Jumping his lifetime best only secured him a 6th place. No matter what, there was nothing he could control. He tried his best, and he was happy with that.
Most importantly, all his training buddies were having fun! That was what a captain would love to see.
Yet, Sun Kei did not escape from the fate of demotion.
Sports are cruel.
A miracle already happened once, no more mercy for the weak this time. Survival of the fittest, Division 1 was not the place for weak teams. If you are not the fittest? I am sorry, you are out.
Sometimes, when the captain had a throwback to the old days, he asked himself. Was he not a good captain? He couldn’t tell. I mean, he had room for improvement, in my opinion.
But at the end of the day, it was just a chapter of our unique story. Just try harder next time.
“We read, we absorb, and we grow. ”
2015 - 16
This year we will see the Power of commitment.
The first medal in the intel-school competition, let’s go! With a year of dedication, Jason improved more than 2ft. Which secured him in second place, and brought his school back to division 1!
“I said it, I meant it”
For the 100m, 12.61s placed 7th in the semi-final. As always, Jason was never a sprinter. There were no miracles. He recognized and accepted it.
“Sometimes we just have to embrace what we were born with. ”
